Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.
Replay technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Players are granted the ability to challenge particular rulings from the chair umpire, echoing the protocol currently in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
This technology will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This development follows just a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Players cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, including:
- If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
- Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.
Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of reviews a competitor can request.
Practical Application
A recent case took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.
The British player conceded it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire viewed a replay and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system in place at all of its events.
Additional Innovations
A further change at The Championships this year involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was out or in.
Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
