Iran is ready to restart atomic talks with the United States provided that it is handled with "dignity" and "honor", Iran's foreign minister has declared.

Abbas Araghchi declared exclusively dialogue produced results, and disclosed new appeals had come from intermediaries to restart talks with the US government. He claimed Iran did not have unreported enrichment locations, and Iran was not yet able to authorize the UN nuclear inspectorate to inspect bombed nuclear sites for security reasons.

Navigating a Challenging Course

Araghchi is walking a complex route since Iran wishes not to be perceived to be proceeding from a stance of weakness, and he emphatically stated that Iran had emerged stronger militarily and mentally from the coordinated strike on its enrichment centers in June.

He was speaking at a strategic meeting in Tehran where he restated that Iran had "an inalienable right to enrich uranium domestically that it will always maintain" – the primary cause of the stalemate in the prior discussions.

Prior Negotiations Suddenly Terminated

The previous five rounds of negotiations between the United States and Iran were brought to an abrupt and hostile conclusion on 12 June when the Israeli government, with US support, attacked Tehran's atomic facilities in a 12-day war that culminated with the US president claiming the sites had been obliterated. Following this, EU nations used their authority to reimpose UN-wide sanctions, but Iran maintains they have not had a significant effect.

Iranian officials claimed they felt they had achieved a "ideal resolution" to the enrichment issue in earlier negotiations, when it was agreed an Iran-based consortium with American involvement could refine atomic fuel. Each party would have been able to declare success since local refinement would have remained and the US could be confident that Iran's enrichment initiative was solely for peaceful purposes.
